My hero is my Mom. When I was growing up there wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. She made all our doll clothes, fixed the leaky pipes under the sink, and worked two jobs. And she was a great bowler too! She still lives in Michigan near my little sister.

As a child, my favorite picture books were by the illustrious Dr. Seuss. I looked forward to visiting my cousin who had every one of his books in her bedroom. My favorite chapter book was Pippi Longstocking. I loved her name, I loved her adventures, I loved everything about her—maybe because I felt she was so much like me! She was a great finder of things, and I was known as the great scavenger. But mostly I loved her attitude, “Don’t you worry about me, I’ll always come out on top.” Pippi and I had that in common, too.
